3533 - SOLAR SYSTEM - Size of our Solar System

  -  3533  -  SOLAR  SYSTEM   -  Size of our Solar System.  If you scale the Solar System size down to basketball size.  What does it look like?  The Earth is a pinhead in the Solar System that is 90 feet across.

---------------------  3533  -  SOLAR  SYSTEM   -  Size of our Solar System

-  The Moon is 239,000 miles away and it takes the Sun’s reflected light 1.3 seconds to reach us.  Most people are surprised to learn that the Moon is 1/4th the size of the Earth.  Its diameter is 2,160 miles.  If the Earth were a basketball the Moon would be a tennis ball 25 feet away.  (scale 1 to 50 million).

-

-  Saturn is 840,000,000 miles away this month.  It takes 75 minutes for its light to reach us.  Saturn has a diameter of 75,000 miles.  That is 9 1/2 times the size of the Earth.  The diameter of Saturn’s rings is 170,000 miles.  That is ¾ th the distance from the Earth to the Moon.

-

-   If the Earth were a basketball Saturn’s rings would be 18 feet across and the planet would be 8 feet in diameter.  If Saturn were a basketball Earth would be a large marble 1.75 miles away.  On this scale Saturn’s rings would be 1/12th the thickness of a human hair.

-

-  Our Sun is 865,000 miles in diameter, 109 times the size of the Earth.  The Sun is 93,000,000 miles away and it takes over 8 minutes for the sunlight to reach us.  If the Earth was a basketball the Sun would be the size of the basketball court and 2 miles away.

-

-  If the Sun were a basketball the Earth would be the head of a pin, 1/8th inch, and 90 feet away.  (scale 1 to 5.5 billion).  To get out to Neptune the Solar System would be 1 mile across.

-

-  The Earth a 1/8 inch pinhead.  This pinhead included the most recent index of reviews in case anyone has a hankering for info on these questions.  Just ax!
