WATER - Santa Rosa water?

 -  2888  -  WATER  -  Santa Rosa water?   One gallon of Santa Rosa drinking water costs 0.25 cents, four gallons cost a penny.  By comparison, bottled drinking water costs $6.00 per gallon.  So, why buy drinking water at the grocery store?

------------------------  2888  -  WATER  -  Santa Rosa water

-  Santa Rosa water district has 170,000 customers.  They get water to customers through 605 miles of pipe.  There are 20 water storage tanks around the city holding 20,000,000 gallons of water.  That is $40,000 worth of water.

-

-  We get the water from 7 wells sunk in the river bed of the Russian River, between Wohler and Marabel bridges.  There are 3 additional water wells on the Santa Rosa plain.

-

-  And , there are 7 wells in emergency standby status in case of a natural disaster. So, the Russian River is our source of drinking river.  And, the source of water for the river is Lake Sonoma, Lake Pillsbury, and Lake Mendocino.  And, the source for these lakes is winter rains.

-

-  The sand beds in the river bottom filter our water.  The only additional treatment our water gets is chlorine gas and pH balance.  Chlorine gas kills bacteria and sodium hydroxide ( caustic soda ) provides the pH balance.  If the water is too acidic it leaches copper out of the pipes contaminating the drinking water with copper.

-

-  The water inspectors take over 120 samples per month to test the water for coliform bacteria ,chlorine residuals, and pH levels.

You can learn about water conversation at:  http://www.srcity.org/wc

-

-  The water goes to 72% residential and 28% commercial.  Summer demand is 33,000,000 gallons per day and winter 13,000,000 gallons per day.  Kathy uses 830 gallons of water a day, 25,000 gallons a month.  It costs $125 per month or 0.5 cents a gallon.  0.5 cents is twice as much because the city charges you once for water going in and again for water going out, a sewer usage tax.

-

-  Contaminants come from viruses and bacteria, inorganic salts and minerals, pesticides and herbicides, gas stations or urban storm water runoff, radioactive radon.  MTBE is methylterbutyl ether, an additive to gasoline.

-

-  No fluoride is added to Santa Rosa water.  Some cities do add fluoride to give the population stronger teeth.  Santa Rosa does add sodium hydroxide which may be a concern to some citizens who can not have sodium.  The level is 16 parts per million where the FDA says it is ok to have 6000 parts per million per day.  So, drinking water should not be a worry for those not wanting sodium in their diets.

-

-  The average water hardness is 47.9 parts per million.  Water softness below 30 parts per million corrodes plumbing pipes.  Water hardness above 300 parts per million causes scaling on water pipes and cooking utensils.

-

-  The chemicals detected in Santa Rosa water in the year 2004 were  ( ppm is parts per million or milligrams per liter,  ppb is parts per billion or micrograms per liter)

-

- Measured Max Allowed  % or Max Allowed

-  Vanadium .28 50 .6%

-

-  The highest percentages versus the maximum allowable is lead and odor in our water, 26% and 30%.

-

-  It is amazing all the tests and measurements performed on drinking water.

-

-  At ¼ cent per gallon this water is a pretty good deal.  Conserve it and us it wisely.  Remember fish have babies in this water.
