GENEALOGY - from Jim to blue algae

 -  2836  -  GENEALOGY  -  from Jim to blue algae.  Kathy’s genealogy is in Review 520 and it goes back to Adam and Eve, 12 pages but a fascinating read.  The Detrick’s genealogy is  Review 521.  It doesn’t go back so far, just back to circus performers and horse thieves.   Jim’s genealogy in this review goes back the farthest, to blue algae.

---------------------------  2836 -  GENEALOGY  -  from Jim to blue algae

-    Jim’s genealogy starts with my earliest ancestors and comes up to today.  In other words this review 2836 starts with Eukaryotes and ends with Hoosiers covering 3,500,000,000 years.

-

-   That many years ago Eukaryotes and Eubacteria were organisms having a single cell with a membrane bound nucleus.  Prokaryotes are bacteria cells that do not have a membrane around its nucleus.  But they do have double-stranded DNA

-

-   In Eukaryotes the DNA binds to proteins to form chromosomes.  I have 46 chromosomes in my body.  The gene is a special segment of DNA the codes the production of these proteins.  I have over 100,000 genes whereas bacteria only have 3,000 and viruses only 6 genes.  Remember this all started 3,500,000,000 years ago.

-

-   Blue-green algae are not truly plants.  The cell structure is similar to bacteria, but, they do photosynthesis, not with chloroplasts like plants but with membranes within the cells.  They were the first oxygen evolving organisms that turned Earth’s atmosphere “aerobic“.

-

-   Next came green plants and red algae.  There are now 15,000 species of algae water plants.

-

-   Amoebas and slim mold. Slim mold is not a pretty name.   Amoebas are a jelly like mass of cytoplasm that moves and engulfs food particles.  Cytoplasm is the substance between the cell membrane and the nucleus.

-

-   Mushrooms, yeast, spores and fungi came next.   Fungi are single cell organisms that live by decomposing and absorbing the organic material in which hey grow.

-

-   Mollusks, flatworms and insects first started 500,000,000 years ago.  Mollusks are snails, octopuses and squids.  Squid have been measured up to 70 feet long.  But the big survivors are the insects. There are 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 insects populating Earth.

-

-  Preverberate and jawless fish were next.  There are now 21,000 species of fish today, starting  425,000,000 years ago.

-   Perch, eels, and trout. (400,000,000 years ago)

-  Lungfish  (400,000,000 years ago)

-   Salamanders and frogs.

-

-  Reptiles (300,000,000 years ago)

-

-   Birds (200,000,000 years ago)

-

-   Mammals developed from reptiles (200,000,000 years ago) and now there are 4,000 species of mammals.

-

-   Platypuses and anteaters.

-

-   Kangaroos, possums, and bandicoots, a large East Indian rat. Possums are noted for feigning death when in danger.

-

-   Elephants, moles, manatees

-

-   Bats, deer, saber tooth cats, bears.  (40,000,000 years ago)

-

-   Lemurs in Madagascar and bush babies in the African forests.

-

-   Baboons in Africa and Arabia, langurs, leaf eating monkeys in South Asia.

-

-   Apes, anthropoid primates, anthropoid means resembling humans. (30,000,000 years ago)

-

-  Chimpanzees in equatorial Africa.

-

-  Homo erectus, Java Man and Peking Man, the first hominoid to leave Africa. Australopitheus, southern apes in Africa that walked on two legs and gave rise to the first hominoids. (4,000,000 years ago)

-

-    Homo sapiens split from Homo habilis (2,000,000 years ago)  Homo habilis was in East Africa (2,200,000 years ago).  Neanderthals were in Europe and Asia.

-

-   3000 years ago humans started using fire to light up the night.

-

-   2000 years ago Greeks and Arabs develolp theories of light propagation, reflection, refraction, and how the eyes worked.

-   1000 years ago Arab and Chinese experimented with light , lenses and mirrors.  Copernicus said Earth revolves around the Sun.

-

-   400 years ago my ancestors used microscopes and telescopes.  Isaac Newton wrote his theories of motion and gravitation.

-

-  300 years ago Newton proposed that light came in particles.  Herschel discovered Uranus.

-

-   200 years ago The wave theory of light was proposed.  Infrared and ultraviolet light were discovered.  The first photographic image was created.

-

-  170 years ago the speed of light was accurately measured.  Spectroscopy was invented.  Maxwell proposed light is an electromagnetic wave.

-

-   140 years ago Hertz proved that light was an electromagnetic wave.  Michelson and Morley proved that there was no “either“.  Tesla and Marconi invented the radio.  Eastman invented photographic film.

-

-   100 years ago Einstein and Planck revolutionized physics with quantum mechanics and photon of light.  Radio became a popular broadcast.  TV was invented . Tombaugh discovered Pluto.

-

-   70 years ago the Electron microscope was invented  TV became the popular broadcast.  Lasers, holograph, fiber optics, computers, space exploration happened.

-

-  40 years ago video games, moon landings, robots on Mars, personal computers, fiber optics, internet and world wide web came along.

-

-   Today Hoosiers and Giant’s baseball fans roam the lands of Sonoma County.

-

-  I never knew I was related to a possum. It turns out to be one of my oldest relatives.

-

-   Some say God must have been having a bad day when he created the platypus.  Actually, its an amazing animal.  It can find shrimp to eat without seeing, hearing, or smelling them.  It has special sensors in its bill that can detect faint electric signals given off by the shrimp when they twitch their muscles.

-

-  Once life got started it was followed by whole sequences of survival machines.  Reproductive behavior was key.  Evolution depends not just on the survivor behavior of the individual but of the individual gene itself.

-

-  In adopting this theory of evolution, the theory of no God goes way, way beyond the limits of evidence.  It is just too complicated to be anything other than a miracle. So now you know how I got here.  But you’re the one who read this.
