-------------- 4052 - EFFICIENT ENEREGY - the better solution?
- What
is the quickest way to solve American’s energy crises?
-
- Wasting less energy is the quickest way to
get cheap energy and lessen carbon emissions reducing environmental and health
costs. 2/3rds of all energy is lost
during its conversion into forms used by people, most of this energy comes from
carbon fuels.
-
- An example of what can be done is Procter
& Gamble’s factory in Germany that increased production by 45% over 5
year. But, its energy use only increased
12% and carbon emissions did not raise at all, remaining at the year 2001
level. P&G did this with highly
efficient illumination, compressed-air systems, new heating and air
conditioners, and funneling heat losses from compressors back into heating the
buildings.
-
- Some 4,000 houses and buildings in Germany,
Switzerland, Austria, and Scandinavia have made enormous efficiency
improvements, some examples follow: by
covering building roofs with plants, installing automated blinds and shades,
and using dehumidification units that dry and cool office space
simultaneously.
-
- The world’s annual energy use is
134,100,000 gigawatt-hours. 80% of this
comes from carbon emitting fossil fuels, coal, oil and gas. The conversion loss to electricity, gasoline,
heating oil, jet fuel, etc is a loss of
33%, or 44,100,000 gigawatt-hours lost.
-
- The conversion of converted energy to
useful energy out of engines, boilers and light bulbs looses another 34%, or
46,200,000 gigawatt-hours lost. In other
words, 67% of the energy is lost during the two stages of energy conversion to
useful work or leisure. That is
90,300,000 gigawatt-hours of energy that is worth tapping into. This is your best choice for alternative
energy.
-
- Insulated buildings, aerodynamic cars,
changing industrial processes could recover much of this energy quickly and
cheaply compared to other energy generation alternatives. The inefficiency of buildings contributes to
33% of the total energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.
-
- Better refrigerators between 1974 and 2001
have reduced energy consumption of 150,000,000 refrigerators and freezers
enough to save building another 40 gigawatt power plants. Fluorescent light bulbs last 10 times longer
and consume 25% less energy than incandescent lights. Occupancy sensors turn off lights when you
leave the room. Roof overhangs, big
porches, significantly reduce heat buildup on walls and windows.
-
- Carpet manufacturers dye products at 140
degrees Celsius. But they could dye at
room temperatures using the newest enzyme technology. Double pane windows reduce heat flow by
50%. LCD displays use 60% less energy
than CRT’s. New convection ovens can cut
energy use by 20%.
-
- Switzerland has set a goal of using 2,000
watt-hours per person per year. Achieving this goal will increase their GDP by
2/3rds and reduce carbon emissions by 2/3rds within the next 70 years. This concept of energy efficiency does not
mean reduced comfort. It means a
comfortable room and convenient travel but using less energy. It is a healthier atmosphere and cleaner water supply.
-
- It is greater national security with
reduced dependence on oil coming from other nations. It improves profitability and reduces the
costs of adaptation to climate change.
It saves the marine life in the oceans and the animal life on the
glaciers.
-
- Use indoor and outdoor thermometers to
open and close windows to heat and cool the home. Turn of lights when not in the room. Take shorter showers. Buy energy efficient
appliances. Make smarter purchases with
better knowledge of lifetime costs and total environmental costs. It is a
win-win situation and a small cost for you to pay.
-
- Everyone participating in energy efficiency
is the fastest way and cheapest way to achieve our energy needs over the next
50 years. After that time alternative
energy sources will be available to revolutionize our means of generating
energy that is pollution free, with maximum efficiency, and minimum cost. In the meantime, conserve our energy the old
fashion way. Think about it.
