- 4054 - COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND ? The sixth wonder of the Universe is the Cosmic Background Radiation. It is everywhere, filling the entire Universe, in all places and in all directions. You can see it as snow on your UHF TV by tuning the receiver between stations.

- What is so amazing is that you are seeing
the oldest and most distant thing possible. The radiation was created 380,000
years after the Big Bang. In the early
moments after the Big Bang the matter was ionized to the extent not to allow
radiation to escape. Light was trapped inside the expanding and cooling
universe.

- After 380,000 years things cooled down
enough that atoms could begin to form neutralizing the mass of material and
allowing light to escape filling the expanding universe with radiation. Over the last 13,700,000,000 years this
radiation has red-shifted to the lower microwave frequency range. This is the Cosmic Background Radiation that
we are detecting. It is 2.9 degrees
Kelvin and 2,400,000,000 hertz, cycles per second in the UHF frequency range.

- When the background radiation is analyzed
we find the effect of sound waves and the reverberations that occurred in the
early Universe. These shock waves have
the effect of creating hot and cold regions in the radiations, slight shifts in
frequency as higher frequency and lower frequency patches.

- By studying these sound waves astronomers
can estimate the original mass of the Universe.
Their astonishing conclusions are that:

we know.

- That leaves a whole lot of Universe that is
unknown and yet to be discovered.
Studying the microwave background radiation allows us to see the edge of
the Universe, the earliest moment of existence, the creation of mass and
energy, the creation of space and time.
