-------------------- 2539 - SCIENCE - in next 20 years?
-
- Let’s start out with energy. A breakthrough to get us off of oil would be if science could figure out how to use sunlight to breakdown water into hydrogen and oxygen. Then, we could use the hydrogen to power our cars and motorcycles.
-
- We would be getting fuel from sunlight. Plants do it. The same plants are what fuels our bodies. We need gas instead of calories for cars. There is plenty of water in the ocean. The trick is not, is it possible, it is. Science can do it today. The trick is how to get the costs below the cost of oil and gasoline at the pump, oil today is $65 per barrel.
-
- Research and Development is where it is at!!!!!!. We need to get Congress and the Executive Branch to stop paying for kickbacks and earmarks, spending money that they borrow and then ask us taxpayers to pay the interest on the loans spent on “cash for clunkers” and bicycle “paths to nowhere“. The next 30 years is our future. Investments in our future should have a better set of priorities. Government ( We The People) needs to get their act together.
-
- Let’s look at medicine. Already people are integrating with machines. Everyone knows someone who has a hip or knee replacement. There are heart, lung, and kidney transplants. If biological tissues could be fully integrated with machines, humans could become more like robots.
-
- In 30 years when humans are half robots how will we know which we are talking to???? People’s brains could be directly connected into the internet and each person would have all the knowledge available to him or her that was ever created.
-
- With the progress in re-creating DNA and genetic codes science could have the ability to resurrect extinct life forms. We could see T. rex roaming our national parks. I hope they have him on a leash. Elephants in zoos will have mastodon babies.
-
- Blind people who read brail actually see the pictures inside their brains. The brain can create the visuals without seeing with their eyes. In effect, they are seeing with their fingers. Science is now recreating brain imaging using the sensory skin on your tongue.
-
- We already have cochlear implants to improve hearing, retinal implants to restore sight. How soon will we communicate directly with the cortex to make direct visual images in the brain? Then, there is that internet connection we were talking about.
-
- We have already mapped more of the surface of Mars than we have of the ocean floors on Earth. Only 5% of the oceans have been explored by science. R&D money spent on exploring the other 95% could bring many new discoveries. Half of all the oxygen we breath comes from the oceans. There are little floating plants out there doing the job.
-
- We should understand them a lot better than we do. We could design space ships to reach 11,000 feet depths in the oceans. Science could save sharks from extinction, coral reefs from decay, if we understood the ocean environment we could do so much more to help our planet. There are resources there we are going to need in the future.
-
- We need R&D money to explore our own planet. More funding is being used to discover exoplanet then to discover our own. To date science has discovered over 4500 planets in other solar systems. Interesting but saving “our planet” might be better than planning to leave it for some other world out there.
-
- Science will be sending space robots the size of cell phones accelerated to distant planets to take pictures and phone home. ET phone home is a reality likely to happen! Maybe robots to explore the ocean depths here on Earth might be worth a few dollars.
-
- In the 1990’s 11,000,000 children under 5 died each year. In 2010 it is down to 7,700,000 deaths per year. Measles was one of the largest causes of deaths in these children. Vaccines are making a difference. But, vaccines need to get to more kids. Malaria kills 1,000,000 people each year.
-
- DDT would have prevented many of these deaths if it had not been banned by those who do not understand science. One of many unintended consequences from government. Congress banned DDT rather than control its use. I am not saying Congress is ignorant, I am just saying that much of what they know just isn’t so.
-
- Deaths are occurring due to diarrhea, pneumonias, malnutrition, neonatal sepsis, preterm births, all of which are preventable and treatable. If we spent half the money on vaccines as we do on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan we could save millions of lives around the world every year. HIV vaccines are 30% effective today. So many vaccines are available to prevent all these diseases that are killing people, unnecessarily.
-
- The Theory of Relativity is gravity’s equations on how “big things” work. Quantum Mechanics is particles physics equations on how “small things” work, the size of bacteria and atomic particles. It should be the same world but neither math will work in the other world. What are we missing that would allow one theory to work in both arenas.
-
- Relativity says gravity is caused by curved space. Quantum Theory says gravity is caused by the exchange of fundamental particle, called gravitons. This would be similar to how photons are the force carriers for the electromagnetic force.
-
- Then there is Dark Matter and Dark Energy, 95% of the Universe that we do not understand. The next 20 years, by 2040, we should discover a lot more, even more interesting times are ahead. Stay tuned. I will probably miss some of this.
